ROTK Legacy

I’m creating a turn-based strategy game inspired by “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” (ROTK), but with my own unique twist, which could appeal to fans of both historical fiction and strategic gameplay. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how I’m envisioning building the game:

1. Game Setting & Theme

  • Time Period: Late Eastern Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period of China (approximately 184-280 AD).
  • Historical Context: The land will be divided into regions or kingdoms, with each user starting with one of these territories. The world will reflect a mix of real historical events and figures, allowing players to interact with key characters from that time period.

2. Gameplay Mechanics

  • Turn-based Strategy: Each player will take turns to manage their lands and armies. This will be structured to allow for both economic (resource management, building, etc.) and military (battle tactics, troop management) actions.
  • Army Management:
    • Troops: Players can recruit armies, train soldiers, and assign officers. Different units (infantry, cavalry, archers) can have specific strengths and weaknesses, adding layers of tactical depth to battles.
    • Generals/Officers: Iconic officers from ROTK, each with unique stats (e.g., intelligence, charisma, leadership) that can affect the battle outcomes and how well armies perform in different situations.
  • Resource Management:
    • Food, Gold, and Supplies: These are the key resources for building armies, maintaining cities, and expanding. Managing resources will be key to maintaining power.
    • Buildings: Each region will have the opportunity to build structures like barracks, marketplaces, and fortifications, which can improve the player’s ability to recruit troops or protect their lands.
  • Diplomacy:
    • Players can form alliances, betray others, and manage relationships with NPC factions or other players, including dealing with the threat of war or trade.

3. Map and World Design

  • Regions: The game world will be divided into regions or provinces, each controlled by a player. Each region will have its own strategic significance based on geography, resources, or proximity to other regions.
  • Cities & Fortresses: Players can control cities, which are crucial for recruiting troops, gathering resources, and expanding their influence. Fortresses can be built for defense.
  • Major Landmarks: Incorporate historical cities like Luoyang, Chang’an, and others from the ROTK lore, each with specific traits.

4. Combat System

  • Battle System: Since this is turn-based, battles would unfold with each side taking actions (move, attack, defend, use skills) in turns. This could involve:
    • Tactical Deployment: Positioning your troops strategically on a battlefield.
    • Skills/Abilities: Officers can have special abilities based on their characteristics. For instance, some could rally troops, while others might sabotage enemy plans or boost morale.
    • Morale: As in the original, morale plays a big role in battles. High morale boosts your troops’ strength, while low morale can lead to defections or retreats.

5. Progression & Objectives

  • Victory Conditions:
    • Players can win by conquering all rival territories, or through diplomacy by uniting the land under a single ruler.
    • Other potential victory types could include economic dominance (e.g., amassing a set amount of resources) or influence over specific regions.
  • Leveling Up/Progression: Characters and territories can level up over time. For example:
    • Generals/Officers might gain experience and increase in rank, improving their skills and stats.
    • Regions might grow, unlocking new abilities or resources as they are developed.

6. Multiplayer Features

  • Single Player Mode: Players could face off against AI-controlled kingdoms, allowing them to experience the storyline or create their own legacy.
  • Multiplayer Mode: Players can challenge each other in PvP matches or cooperate in multiplayer campaigns, either as allies or rivals.
  • Online Leaderboards: Track the success of players and their armies, allowing users to see who controls the most land, has the strongest army, or has achieved the greatest historical feats.

7. Art Style & User Interface

  • Art Style: Since you’re drawing inspiration from ROTK, you might want to choose an art style that reflects ancient Chinese aesthetics—think traditional art and maps, with subtle textures to reflect the era.
  • UI/UX: Keep the interface user-friendly but deep enough to offer complex strategies. Consider a map-based UI where players can quickly see their armies, resources, and alliances.

8. Narrative Elements

  • Storylines: While the game will be mostly strategy-based, you can include narrative elements like campaigns or side quests that involve famous events or battles from the Three Kingdoms period.
  • Historical Characters: Feature well-known figures such as Liu Bei, Cao Cao, Sun Quan, and others, each with specific abilities or missions. Players can recruit or form alliances with these historical figures.

9. Monetization

  • Free-to-play/Pay-to-play: This will be online multiplayer version, consider implementing in-game purchases for cosmetic items, resources, or temporary boosts, etc
  • Expansion Packs or DLC and beyond: New campaigns, characters, or regions can be introduced as paid expansions to keep the game fresh.
